The under-appreciation of German art - and culture more generally
- in Britain is one of our enduring shames. Despite recent efforts
to catch up, our museums and galleries are woefully under-
represented in the great German Modernist schools and, since Henry
Meyric Hughes left the South Bank, of contemporary art as well. As
you go back, it gets worse. A recent exhibition at the London
