WE all know of Hans Holbein, the German who became court painter
to Henry VIII and set standards for both formal and intimate
portraiture that not one of his English successors ever equalled.
We know too of Albrecht Drer, the German painter who, more than
any other, forged connections between the Italian Renaissance and
the art of central Europe, a man internationally reputable enough to
exchange drawings with Raphael. But do we know of Lucas Cranach, the
third grandee of 16th century German art, born in 1472, a year or so
after Drer and 25 years before Holbein but long outliving both? I ...
