KURT Masur is the surprise draw at the Proms, the hottest ticket in opening week. Eighty years old next Wednesday on the day he performs at the Albert Hall he never expected to stand at the helm of his art, a human bridge between past and future. He looks faintly amazed when I describe him as the doyen of the German conducting tradition.
