Grammar school to take 'poor' students ; HOME

A grammar school is opening its sixth form to pupils from neighbouring comprehensives whose families have no history of going on to university.

The move by Bexley Grammar School in southeast London comes after claims that the country's 164 remaining selective schools are elitist.

Under the scheme, which is being launched in September, 35 pupils a year will be recruited from three neighbouring schools. Stuart Sharp, the teacher in charge of the project at St Thomas More Catholic school, said: "This is open to the children of parents who haven't been to university and ...
