BBC bosses today awarded themselves bumper pay rises as they told the public that cash constraints meant there would be more repeats.

News that senior executives had pocketed base pay increases of between 15,000 and 38,000 was immediately followed by director- general Mark Thompson announcing that viewers should expect to see more repeated programmes in coming years.

The move flies in the face of a commitment three years ago by Michael Grade, then chairman, to slash repeats.
