The most compelling item on the National Symphony Orchestra's current program at the Kennedy Center is the rarely heard "Pampeana No. 3, Symphonic Pastoral" (Op. 24) by the Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera.

Ginastera (1916-1983) is best remembered for his coursing, violent and passionate operas "Bomarzo," "Don Rodrigo" and "Beatrix Cenci"; moreover, pianists are fond of his ferocious Sonata No. 1, which has the unusual merit of sounding harder to play than it is. This "Pampeana" offers a very different perspective on Ginastera. Here, the composer seems almost a Latin American answer ...
