Mayor to teachers: Lengthen school day; 'Can't we at least get a few more hours?'

For years, Mayor Daley has been sounding the alarm for a longer school day and longer school year. He has argued that 10-week summer vacations are an anachronism tailor-made for kids who live and work on the farm.

On Tuesday, Daley turned his rhetoric up a notch. He made a direct appeal to the Chicago Teachers Union, which is negotiating a new contract.

"I know they want more money. I understand that. But, can't we at least get a few more hours a day out of this system of keeping children in school?" the mayor told the Executives' Club of Chicago.
