Annexation: Most occurred between 1950 and 1970

Topeka began life in 1854 as little more than a square mile on the
south bank of the Kansas River.
Through nearly 150 years of annexations, it has grown to 56.6
square miles. However, most of that growth occurred before 1990, when
the city's area was 55.7 square miles.
During the 1990s, the city added only 0.9 square mile, less than a
