BERN --- The town of Bern in north-central Nemaha County has a population of only 214, but it provides 190 jobs despite its small size.

R. Gary Lortscher, the Bern businessman who has been the town's treasurer for 30 years, said although the biggest employer in town, AHRS general contractor, has 50 workers, most residents of Bern work in the town's small retail and service establishments of fewer than 20 employees.

The second-largest employer is the Axtell-Bern-Summerfield Unified School District 488, which has 33 employees for its two school ...
