Boris Karloff, 'The Bells' to toll at cathedral

Boris Karloff played spooky before he first donned his Frankenstein makeup in 1931.

Karloff portrays the Mesmerist in "The Bells," a 1926 silent movie that will be the feature film at the ninth annual Silents in the Cathedral program, which will begin at 7 p.m. Friday in Grace Episcopal Cathedral.

The Dr. Caligari-like Mesmerist brings his sideshow to an Alsatian village where he astounds the townsfolk by putting a young woman into a trance and levitating her. However, in an effective bit of foreshadowing, he boasts in one of the interstitial titles, "I ...
