Dear Consummate Consumer:

I want to buy a house and some real estate brokers tell me I should contract with them as a "buyer's broker" in order to get the best buy. So far I have resisted because I don't see the point. The brokers argue that they can be more truthful in disclosing information, including value, about a house if they act as a buyer's broker.

In signing a buyer's broker contract I would be liable for half the commission. Since the commission comes out of the sale and is paid by the seller, what incentive does the broker have to be honest with me? And why should I limit ...
