Jimmie Rodgers, Local Yodel

Jimmie Rodgers was born and bred in Meridian, Miss., but he was living in Washington when his third record, "Blue Yodel," became a huge hit in 1927. It was an announcer on WTFF, a local station where Rodgers had a weekly show, who dubbed him "America's Blue Yodeler."

Rodgers's first major concert, headlining a vaudeville revue, was at the Earle Theater, then Washington's finest. Rodgers first performed there in his blue brakeman's uniform with the rakishly tilted peaked cap, generating 16 curtain calls and cementing his "Singing Brakeman" persona.
