White smoke poured from the Sistine Chapel's chimney Tuesday in
Vatican City, indicating a new pope had been elected to lead the
world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics.
Half a world away, many Catholics in Topeka were caught off guard.
Some expressed surprise that a new pope was elected after only two
days of the College of Cardinals' conclave. The election could have
taken up to 16 days.
Then, when the new pope was announced as Cardinal Joseph
Ratzinger, a native of Germany, the surprise continued.
