Untouchable No More; First Former Outcaste President Is No Activist for India's Poorest

Growing up in southern India as the son of a traditional physician who counted Brahmans among his patients, K.R. Narayanan was one of the few untouchables of his day who knew what it meant to be treated with respect.

"We never felt we were low. Because of my father, everybody gave some respect to us," Bhargavi Poulose, a sister, recalled.
