Back in the 1970s a controversy arose over a display in the Museum of Natural History at The University of Kansas over the stuffed body of the horse, "Commanche."

The controversy was over a sign proclaiming Commanche to have been "the sole survivor of Custer's Last Stand."

The objections came from Native Americans, who pointed out that a lot of Native Americans survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

KU authorities conceded and changed the wording of the sign.
