2 Diet Drugs Are Pulled Off Market; Health Concerns Grow After FDA Links Pills To Rare Heart Problem

Drug companies yesterday pulled two highly popular diet drugs off the market because of growing concerns they may cause serious heart problems.

The drugs -- dexfenfluramine, which is sold as "Redux," and fenfluramine, one-half of the popular diet drug combination known as "fen/phen" -- were withdrawn after the Food and Drug Administration raised new safety questions about them.

The FDA said it has found evidence that perhaps one-third of those using the prescription medications may develop a rare form of heart valve damage that could lead to weakening of the heart.…
