On June 6, 1999, Mike Silverman and Dave Greenbaum stood before a rabbi and exchanged wedding vows.

"It was really treated no different than a man and a woman getting married," Greenbaum said. "One or two of the words were changed --- obviously, you couldn't say husband and wife --- but for the most part it was treated just like any other Jewish marriage."

But while they share a home in Lawrence and refer to each other as spouses, they aren't considered a married couple under a Kansas law recognizing only heterosexual marriages. And with state legislators considering a constitutional amendment ...
