Original Chautauqua doesn't need to make a comeback

An article I read in the newspaper this past July announced that a Chautauqua was "making a comeback" in Stockton. Perhaps the writer wasn't aware that the original Chautauqua, in southwest New York State, doesn't need to make a comeback. It draws more than 150,000 people each summer.

It is true that the traveling Chautauquas known to many Kansans nearly a century ago faded away until recently when the idea has been resurrected and several communities have held them once again, a throw-back to an era when they were a grandstand for education and entertainment.
