One day in January, 1506, Michelangelo was called over to a vineyard on the Esquiline Hill. The farmer had come across some bits of ancient statuary. That wasn't unusual - remains were always turning up in Renaissance Rome - but this looked like something spectacular, and Michelangelo tagged along with another artist, Giuliano da Sangallo, who also brought his young son.
