An Apology: So Much More Than Words

So many words.
A torrent of them was unleashed last week after a bipartisan
group of white lawmakers proposed that a formal statement of regret
-- an apology -- be issued to "African Americans whose ancestors
suffered as slaves under the Constitution and the laws of the United
States until 1865." President Clinton, who has apologized to Cold
War radiation victims and black men in the Tuskegee experiment, was
"noncommittal" about the idea -- making him the only American
without an opinion.
House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) scoffed that the measure
would do nothing for poor children. ...
