Artists who print monotypes never know exactly what they're
going to get. Monotypes are slippery. That's part of the fun.
Those in the exhibition "Singular Impressions: The Monotype in
America" at the National Museum of American Art have a way of moving
in between the realms of the painting and the print. Even when they
are utterly conventional, as is often the case, the monotypes
displayed in this likable, collegial show consistently surprise.
