Buffalo roundup: Utah's bison are among the most sought-after in U.S.

The chop-chop of the rotors on the helicopter could be heard long before the thunder of pounding hoofs or the billowing grunts from running buffalo.

But there they were, roughly 600 head, in a group, moving toward the island corrals and captivity. Herding the buffalo were two helicopters, a half-dozen vehicles and roughly 170 riders on horseback.

What once took two long days was over before noon on Saturday. Aside from several dozen stragglers, the annual buffalo roundup ended with one big push.
