Tomorrow is Earth Day, time to tell of Thor Heyerdahl, a
passionate proponent of the planet, and of a forgotten link between
the explorer and Washington.
Earlier this month, several admirers -- including the
Chronicler -- of the famed 82-year-old adventurer lunched with him
at the invitation of Norwegian Ambassador Tom Eric Vraalsen and his
wife, Viebecke. Fifty years ago this month, Heyerdahl launched the
balsa raft Kon-Tiki's perilous 101-day journey across 4,300 ocean
miles from Callao, Peru, to Raroia, Polynesia. Few believed his
revolutionary theory that as early as 1200 B.C., ...
