Qwest clears first hurdle in effort to buy Allegiance

Qwest Communications International Inc., the fourth-largest U.S. local-telephone company, cleared the first hurdle in its effort to buy bankrupt Allegiance Telecom when a judge approved an auction for the sale Friday.

Qwest hopes to acquire the local network infrastructure of Allegiance for $390 million instead of building its own. Dallas- based Allegiance provides local network service to more than 100,000 business customers in 36 U.S. markets.

Getting Allegiance would allow Qwest to reduce access charges it pays to local carriers for routing calls to local lines. Qwest's bid is for $300 ...
