U. scientists find genetic link in bones

University of Utah scientists have uncovered the secret of a set of genes that controls the development of certain bones. The discovery also gives a clue about the evolution of vertebrates, animals with backbones.

Eventually, said U. geneticist Mario R. Capecchi, this work could lead to such medical improvements as regrowing a person's limb. Replacing an arm destroyed in an accident may seem like science fiction today, he said in a telephone interview, but it won't be "once we really understand the process and can intercede."
