Sir Alexander Todd Dies at 89; Nobel Prize-Winning Chemist

Sir Alexander Todd, 89, the Nobel Prize-winning British chemist whose research laid the groundwork for understanding what genes are made of, died Jan. 10 in Cambridge, England, where he lived. The cause of death was not reported.

Sir Alexander was recognized as one of the world's leading lights in organic chemistry and biochemistry. He was known for synthesizing or helping to synthesize several of the substances that are vital to life, on the level of the individual cell.
