Brine shrimp thrive in drought

Dry weather in the West has harmed some wildlife species, but brine shrimp in the Great Salt Lake appear to be thriving in the drought.

The harvest season that ended Jan. 31 netted close to 26 million pounds of brine shrimp biomass -- exceeding the previous record, set the year before, by about 6 million pounds.

The "biomass" harvest figure includes not only brine shrimp, but also their eggs and algae. Crews harvested from Oct. 1 to Jan. 31 this year.
