Kisangani Calm As Residents Brace for Chaos; Rebels and Government Troops Face Off Around Key Zaire City

Kisangani, north-central Zaire's largest city, is tense but quiet as Zaire's army and rebel forces prepare for the most important battle of their five-month-old war, according to residents and a U.N. team that visited today.

Kisangani, a commercial and transportation hub on the Zaire River, has become the focus of the war. Zairian rebels, who reportedly are backed by Ugandan and Rwandan troops, have been massing forces around the city for weeks and now control the main roads leading to it.
