Maia's career back on track

SAN JOSE -- Leonardo "Leo" Maia was born in Brazil, so racing and soccer may be in his blood. But he grew up in the East Bay, where his family moved when he was 3, ultimately settling in Oakland.

And after playing soccer in high school, Maia took a course at the Skip Barber Racing School at Laguna Seca, and a passion was born.

Maia, 25, has lived the past three years in Miami, but he is returning to the Bay Area this weekend for the San Jose Grand Prix. He's racing in the Atlantic series, a support series for the Champ Car World Series, and was 13th Friday in the first round of qualifying.
