San Francisco Columnist Herb Caen Dies at 80
|
Herb Caen, 80, the longtime San Francisco newspaper local
columnist whose six-decade-long effort to report on the city's fans,
foibles and fables made him something of a national institution,
died of cancer yesterday at a San Francisco hospital.
He began writing his six-day-a-week column for the San

until his death.
Mr. Caen (pronounced "cane") wrote a roundup of gossip,
one-liners and local news tidbits -- along with the occasional
insult of the high ...
