Canadian artist Jeff Wall, whose dazzling photographs are now at
the Hirshhorn, was still groping for a mode of expression when he
spotted an advertisement at a bus stop in Spain 20 years ago.
It was a backlit color transparency hawking some forgotten
product. But on this particular day, his head still abuzz from
seeing the masterpieces of Velazquez at the Prado, that mundane
light box seemed to offer just what he'd been looking for: a format
that could give contemporary photography ...
