Digitalis Curbs Hospitalizations

Digitalis, a drug used for more than two centuries to treat
heart failure, helps keep patients out of the hospital but doesn't
help keep them alive, a large study found.
Digitalis is widely prescribed, but it's so old it hasn't
gotten the kind of scrutiny that a new medicine would. So doctors
have long debated its usefulness for the 4.8 million Americans
affected by heart failure.
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute sponsored the new
study, in which 6,800 patients were randomly assigned to take either
digitalis or a dummy pill.
