Glorious dahlias brighten late-summer gardens
|
THE FLOWERS of spring may get a lot of attention, but they're
nothing compared to the queens of the August garden.
Dahlias are rangy, spunky garden classics. They can have blooms as
broad and pillowy as a small sofa cushion, as round as a golf ball,
or as spiky and two-toned as a punk-rock hairdo.
And all they want from you, really, is a stake for support, a
sunny spot, some fertilizer and a good winter's rest. In return, they
give prolific blooms that make terrific cut flowers and are garden
show-stoppers -- just when everything else is tired out by late-
summer heat.
