BERKELEY -- Thomas Jefferson Elementary School could be renamed Sequoia Elementary School, which isn't likely to offend anyone, unless they don't like evergreen trees.

Sequoia topped the list of eight alternative names that teachers, parents and about 300 students chose Tuesday night, capping a two- year quest to change the school's name because Jefferson was a slave owner.
