ANTICA Trattoria in San Francisco, opened by chef/owner Ruggero Gadaldi in 1996, is one of the most authentic local trattorias I've visited in some time. Here in America we don't distinguish, but in Italy, restaurants and trattorias are entirely different establishments. Both offer food and wine, but restaurants, or ristoranti, are considered more formal. Trattorie serve rustic, home- style cuisine and the local wine, often delivered in simple water glasses.

Antica epitomizes this concept in design and cuisine.
