Ellis quietly gets job done for A's A's new leadoff man still reflects his small-town upbringing

PHOENIX -- When Mark Ellis was playing American Legion baseball in
Rapid City, S.D., his coach Dave Ploof had some hard and fast rules.
"If you don't run out a ground ball, you come out of the game,"
Ellis said. "We sprinted on and off the field."
These days, Ellis no longer takes the field in a full sprint. That
kind of thing is generally frowned upon in the professional ranks.
"Just a nice little jog," Ellis said.
