Chicago -- They looked on themselves as prophets.
They saw a fine oil painting not as a window onto the world but as
a rectangular portal into the human soul: an arrangement of dots,
slashes, hues, lines and tones on a flat surface.
Most important of all, they were eager to get fine art off the
easel, out of the stuffy studio and onto the walls of their rich
patrons' mansions, chateaux and cavernous Parisian apartments.
