Giovanni Battista Piranesi was an 18th-century architect who built
very little yet managed greatly to influence conceptions of
architecture in his own time and even -- still -- in ours.
This is because he poured his boundless energy into making large,
impressive architectural etchings, producing in four decades more
than a thousand images in countless variations. The prints were
extremely popular during his lifetime, especially in England; their
fame today is worldwide.
