An off-duty Fairfax County police officer who fatally shot a cocker spaniel that was running loose in his yard in Sterling was convicted Thursday of illegally discharging a firearm in public.

Larry Jones, 40, who has worked as a Fairfax officer for 17 years, told deputies he shot the cocker spaniel Sept. 22 after the dog, named Franky, became aggressive and growled at him.
