An off-duty Fairfax County police officer who fatally shot a
cocker spaniel that was running loose in his yard in Sterling was
convicted Thursday of illegally discharging a firearm in public.
Larry Jones, 40, who has worked as a Fairfax officer for 17
years, told deputies he shot the cocker spaniel Sept. 22 after the
dog, named Franky, became aggressive and growled at him.
Judge James Forsyth of Loudoun County General District Court
ordered Jones to pay a $500 fine.
