Pity the poor pear. Its cousin, the apple, got all the lead roles
in history.
It's true. Pears played no part in the judgment of Paris or in the
discovery of Newtonian physics -- not to mention the Garden of Eden.
So you may be surprised to learn that in Colonial America, this
bulbous fruit rivaled apples in popularity. Pears were used to make
jams, jellies, preserves, sauces, wine and even a sort of hard cider
called perry.
