Early in the summer of 1776, a group of erudite men met in
Philadelphia to draft a formal statement notifying England that its
American colonies would no longer tolerate their existing political
situation. Though a committee of five was assigned the task of
writing the missive, they selected one man to write the first draft.
The resulting masterpiece of clear, concise writing that lit the
fuse of the American Revolution was the Declaration of Independence.
