Rome -- Author Giorgio Bassani, best known for his semi- autobiographical novel "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis" and its elegiac depiction of Italian Jews during the rise of fascism, died Thursday. He was 84.

Bassani had for years been ill with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.
