Proxmire honored for sharp eye on money Taxpayers' group gives founderof Golden Fleece an award of his own

Saying William Proxmire created "one of the most popular and
enduring icons of American politics," Taxpayers for Common Sense
presented its lifetime achievement award Tuesday to the former
Wisconsin senator for his Golden Fleece awards.
From 1975 through 1988, Proxmire ridiculed what he regarded as
"wasteful, ridiculous or ironic use of the taxpayers' money."
The taxpayers' organization said he had focused public attention
on budgetary waste in every branch of government.
