In the spring of 1969, Jim Runde's life was equal parts promise and peril.

The 22-year-old from Sparta was engaged to be married, and he held an engineering degree from Marquette University in one hand and a fellowship to the graduate program at the Harvard Business School in the other.

There was only one problem: He also held a commission in the Navy, the result of attending college on a Naval ROTC scholarship, a financial necessity given that his parents were schoolteachers with 10 children.
