GROUSE HUNTING Spruce grouse can confuse matters; Protected species could be mistaken for ruffed grouse

Hunters heading to far northern counties in search of Wisconsin's abundant ruffed grouse population this fall should pay particular attention to the bird that flushes ahead of them, especially while hunting around the two national forests.

Instead of a ruffed grouse, for which the season opens Sept. 18 in most areas, the grouse that flushes may be a protected spruce grouse.

Spruce grouse are one of four native species of grouse to Wisconsin -- ruffed, sharp-tailed and prairie chicken are the others -- and the rarest of the four.
