Ken Dryden is a tall man accustomed to high achievement. After entering the hockey Hall of Fame as a goalie, earning a law degree and prospering as an author and television documentarian, Dryden became president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are to hockey in English-speaking Canada what Notre Dame is to college football in the United States, only more so.

At the end of his second season as a novice executive, Dryden's rebuilt team has soared from playoff absenteeism to the final four of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Maple Leafs will open the Eastern Conference finals ...
