Meaning of `The Eel' slips by Melancholy Japanese film was a Cannes festival winner

Is the eel real?
Or is it the physical manifestation of guilt that plagues the lead
character in Shohei Imamura's 1995 film "Unagi," which is Japanese
for "The Eel."
The film shared the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997
with the Iranian film "The Taste of Cherry." Neither film received
much attention in the U.S., but "The Taste of Cherry" did receive a
run at Milwaukee's Times Cinema and the theater performs the same
public service with "Unagi" starting today.
