Effigy mounds humbling as well as historic

The first stage of the hike was heart-healthy and then some, a huffing-puffing trek up steep switchbacks before the trail smoothed and flattened and the climb became a walk.

But the effort needed to reach the ancient treasures of Effigy Mounds National Monument was less work than investment, and the payoff was pleasure. This 1,500-acre park along the Mississippi River is an outdoor museum where mystery is the featured exhibit, all displayed on bluffs affording magnificent views in every direction up and down the river for miles, back in time for centuries.
