Joy Krause The first dwellings we'd recognize as cottages date to the Middle Ages, writes Jim Tolpin in "The New Cottage Home" (The Taunton Press, 1998, $29.95). The houses of medieval serfs and servants in Britain and Europe were called "kots" in the old Norse language, Toplin says. These one- and two-room dwellings, centered on a hearth, were built of indigenous stone or wood and capped with a bowed or high-pitched thatched roof, writes Tolpin, a cabinetmaker-turned-journalist. His book, which includes an in-depth history of cottage design, is one of several that have been published recently on the subject. The author of a number of books on woodworking, Tolpin also is host of The Cottage Home Network web site at www.cottagehome.net. The site includes a photo gallery of recently built cottages, and lists books and magazines on cottages.; JOY KRAUSE
