Blacks need to invest more, panelists say

Stock market returns aren't a common topic around the dinner table in many African-American homes. That will have to change if blacks are to achieve economic freedom for the 21st century, three leaders said at a symposium Friday.

"African-Americans are taught to focus on income, being laborers and trying to make as much money as possible," said Mellody Hobson, senior vice president of marketing for Ariel Mutual Funds.

"That's OK, but the system doesn't respect laborers. To achieve economic freedom, blacks must focus on net worth not what you make, but what you own."
